What should I do if I locate a livestock animal on my property?

The Texas Agriculture Code requires a person who has located a livestock animal, contact the Sheriff’s Office and report it.  The Sheriff’s Office will attempt to locate or contact the owner.  If the owner cannot be located the animal will be impounded.

What happens to impounded livestock?

A public notice is made in the local newspaper of any livestock animal that is impounded by the Sheriff’s Office.  The owner may come to claim their animal after the impoundment fees are paid and the paperwork is completed.  If an animal is not claimed they are held for a minimum of 18 days.  After the 18th day the animal is subject to being auctioned in most cases.

Do I have to report animal bites?

Rules established by the State of Texas require animal bites to be reported to the Local Rabies Control Authority.  Follow-up investigations are conducted throughout the isolation (livestock), quarantine (dogs and cats), or alternative testing (stray or wild animals) process.

What do I do if I have a livestock animal missing?

If there is reason to believe the animal has been stolen, a report should be made as soon as possible. If the animal just escaped an enclosure the animal can be reported to the Sheriff’s Office.  A detailed description will be required.  Our staff will check any impounded livestock reports and notify the deputies of the missing animal and the area.

Is Johnson County open range for livestock animals?
